Writer's Diarrhea

I for the life of me can't decipher my own scribblings. Not because of bad handwriting, but unclear phrasing. Really not helpful to leave a comment such as "Nian's Magic!!!!" there without any further explanation, but at least four exclamation points. It is supposed to be important, but I can't remember what it was about Nian's Magic that needed tweaking or editing...? Must stop using post-its as source of memory. Brain needs more than two words to actually remember stuff. Another one says "Declining Health" and I don't know what that means either. Not even a vague idea. Was I, by any chance, talking about myself? Is there any way to trigger my memory? Mnemonic devices to re-remember stuff? Any ideas?

  1. lol...been there, dearie. I insert notes right into the text, then highlight them. I've found (for me)that is the best way to handle it. Much quicker including all the information that way. :-)

BUT--and this is a BIG but, be sure to remove them after you adjust your text. I will also highlight an entire paragraph or two in an obnoxious color to let me know something there needs attention. Then I refer to my notes.

If you don't remove them, you could discover that you sent the s to a publisher with your edit notes still highlighted--you know, so he's sure not to miss them ;-) lolol...

    Yes, been there too. :-)

    1. That sounds like the right thing to do. I'm always afraid of ending up confused by two many versions, but the highlighted sections are indeed quite pro. I still use these stupid digital post-its..
Oh wow, did the publisher say something to you about the edit notes?

  2. Hey Dana! I just mentioned you in my blogpost. Have you heard of the Lucky Seven meme? I chose you as one of my seven. It involves posting seven sentences of your a WIP. :-)

  3. You are definitely not alone, Dana. I have post-its all around the edges of my monitor right now with one or two word phrases similar to yours. I have the worst "sometimers". I find, though, if I leave them there and read them daily, then one magical morning while in the shower ... Whammo! That boomerang thought will come back to me and whack me in the head. ;)

    2. What a great idea, that could be working for me! There is something magical about taking a shower! It seems to be a common hobby amongst writers, the sensory shower, it does something inexplicable to our brains, doesn't it?! Anyways, I have never thought of showering as the possible cure for my "amnesia". Opens up a whole new world! Thank you Mel! :)

    3. Glad to help. ;) I do believe that I need to invest in a white board and water proof markers so all those amazing, fleeting ideas that come to me in the shower don't all dissipate with the steamy mist. lol.

  4. I'm glad I'm not the only person this happens to on a regular basis. Even when I can't make heads or tails of my editing notes. I've noticed that as long as I stay relaxed and read through the actual manuscript, I can reconnect with my original thoughts. Good luck!
